School of Art Speaker Series - John Yau
Thursday, November 4, 2021
6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Reception: 5:30 - 6 pm
The lecture will trace the development of Liu, who belongs to the first generation of artists to go to school after the Cultural Revolution. Trained in the Socialist Realist style, which idealizes the individual as a way of praising the State, Liu transformed himself into a chronicler of everyday life, and his paintings are based on direct observation. While Liu seems at first glance to be a realist painting, his work expands and redefines that category, pushing it in a fresh direction.
