Toward Understanding Heart Disease: Cardiac Signaling Mechanisms, Reprogrammed Cardiac Conduction Cells and the UH-HEART Training Program

Research in Professor Bradley McConnell’s laboratory involves clinically relevant basic science that addresses significant and innovative questions involving strategies to delineate cardiac signaling mechanisms and to improve cardiac function during heart failure.
McConnell’s lab conducts research that is focused on understanding the biology, physiology and pharmacology of cardiac contractility and function; in both normal healthy hearts and diseased hearts. Specifically, research projects in his laboratory include:
- characterizing A-kinase Anchoring Proteins (AKAP) “signalosomes” in β-adrenergic receptor (βAR) mediated signaling
- defining βAR-mediated “biased” signaling
- investigating reprogrammed cardiac conducting cells for cardiac repair
By addressing clinically significant basic science questions, McConnell’s overall objective is to better understand cardiac signaling mechanisms. Ultimately, he is working toward the development of innovative therapies to improve cardiac contractility of failing hearts and for the cardiac repair of myocardial infarcted hearts (i.e., heart attacks).
