Anna Valdez (b. 1985) is a multi-disciplinary artist who examines the relationship between objects, cultural formation, and collective consciousness. Creating epic tableaux in her studio, Valdez moves seamlessly between still life and landscape painting, collecting objects and making new ones, cultivation, observation, and fictionalization. Valdez received her MFA in painting from Boston University in 2013 and her BA in Anthropology and Art from the University of California, Davis in 2009. Her work has been exhibited nationally at venues including Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, AR; North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, NC; New Britain Museum of American Art in New Britain, CT; Cañada College in Redwood City, CA; Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco, CA and New York, NY; David B. Smith Gallery in New York, NY; and OCHI in Sun Valley, ID and Los Angeles, CA. Valdez’s work has been featured in publications including Juxtapoz Magazine, New American Paintings, Artsy, and Artillery Magazine. Her work is part of the permanent collection of institutions such as; The PAMM in Miami, FL, and the Phyllis & Ross Escalette Permanent Collection of Art at Chapman University, Orange, CA. Valdez lives and works in the San Francisco bay area.

Elgin Street Gallery 2 is a 500 square foot gallery space with dramatic vertical space and an open story ceiling. Gallery 2 is on the first floor of Elgin Street Studios which is connected to Elgin Garage on the UH Main Campus. Gallery 2 is dedicated to experimental exhibitions by School of Art graduate students. Work in the gallery rotates every 2 weeks with a new student or group of students curating, designing, and installing their own exhibitions. Join the artists and the School of Art community for a reception on the second Thursday of each 2-week show. Food and drink will be served.

Focusing on the technology of the paratext—glossaries, introductions, prefaces, notes, forewords and afterwords—this lecture examines how, in the post-WWII period, publishers relied on paratexts to entice English readers, who by and large were uninterested in Arabic authors and their work. Materializing hand-in-hand with a growing corpus of Arabic literature in translation, paratexts serve an integral role in promoting Arabic literature in a publishing industry heavily influenced by foreign policy in the Middle-East. Dima Ayoub, Ph.D. (McGill University) is an Assistant Professor of Arabic and C.V. Starr Junior Faculty Fellow in International Studies at Middlebury College. Dr. Ayoub’s work connects the fields of Digital Humanities with studies of Arabic and comparative literature – she has developed a digital archive of modern Arabic literature in English, French, German and Spanish translation.
