Some of the top thinkers, technology innovators, and front-line operators of border security descended on San Antonio March 26, 27, 2019 in order to discuss that very topic. In order to hear first hand from agencies such as Customs and Border Protection and Border Patrol the current challenges and innovations needed in order to continue to secure the border, the BTI Institute hosted a booth at the Border Security Expo 2019. 

The conference opened with Ronaldo D. Vitiello, deputy director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, discussing the current situation on the border and the need for education and training on the dark web to continue the ICE Homeland Security Investigations' fight against criminal activities.

Speakers representing the National Vetting Center, U.S. Border Patrol, the Laredo Sector, and the Office of Acquisition amongst others presented the challenges and opportunities within their organizations.  

Some of the research or education opportunities presented include:

• Methods to increase economic prosperity in Central America
• Technology and Knowledge pertaining to the Dark Web
• A better way to track the transfer of money through data systems across international lines
• Methods for obtaining pre-arrival for travelers and cargo

The BTI Institute met with multiple representatives from industry and the Department of Homeland Security to discuss research and education collaboration opportunities.
