UH Community Encouraged to Make a First Aid Kit

Houston, June 30, 2017 — The Environmental Health and Life Safety Department encourages extra care and precaution in maintaining personal and work safety at the University of Houston.

One common question that comes up regularly is what to put in a first aid kit. The answer depends on what type of first aid someone wishes to prepare. Now is a good time for individuals to prepare a personal first aid kit for themselves and their family, especially now that hurricane season is underway. A personal first aid kit should include items specific to someone's needs, such as prescription medication and spare eyeglasses, as well as other more traditional first aid kit items, like bandages and ointment.

In terms of a general first aid kit for a university workplace, there are multiple suggestions from different agencies such the American Red Cross, Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the American National Standards Institute. Fortunately, there are many vendors that market general purpose first aids and they are readily available on the internet and at many local stores.

After researching options available, Environmental Health and Life Safety recommends that each department on campus have a first aid kit available containing the following items at a minimum:

  • 2 absorbent compress dressings (5 x 9 inches)
  • 25 adhesive bandages (assorted sizes)
  • 1 adhesive cloth tape (10 yards x 1 inch)
  • 5 antibiotic ointment packets (approximately 1 gram)
  • 5 antiseptic wipe packets
  • 2 packets of aspirin (81 mg each)
  • 1 blanket (space blanket)
  • 1 breathing barrier (with one-way valve)
  • 1 instant cold compress
  • 2 pair of non-latex gloves (size: large)
  • 2 hydrocortisone ointment packets (approximately 1 gram each)
  • Scissors
  • 1 roller bandage (3 inches wide)
  • 1 roller bandage (4 inches wide)
  • 5 sterile gauze pads (3 x 3 inches)
  • 5 sterile gauze pads (4 x 4 inches)
  • Oral thermometer (non-mercury/non-glass)
  • 2 triangular bandages
  • Tweezers
  • First aid instruction booklet

Please feel free to contact EHLS with any questions or concerns at 713-743-5858 or ehs@uh.edu regarding maintaining a first aid kit.
