Houston, April 14, 2017 —The University of Houston community can learn about alternative transportation, arts and crafts using recycled materials and sustainable living during the third annual Earth Week celebration, hosted by the UH Office of Sustainability. This year's Earth Week celebration will take place April 17-23. A full schedule of events is available on the Office of Sustainability website. The week will start with an eco-art event reflecting sustainability and autism at 11:30 a.m. April 17 in the Student Center South Ballroom. On Tuesday, April 18, the Office of Sustainability and UH Parking and Transportation will host Kick-off with COAST. Attendees will have the chance to win prizes as they learn more about COAST, the alternative and sustainable transportation program that encourages UH faculty, staff and students to carpool or ride METRO to campus instead of purchasing a parking permit. Kick-off with COAST will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Student Center circle drive. Learn how to keep bicycles in top shape at a bike maintenance workshop from noon to 2:30 p.m. April 19 at the Student Center Plaza stage. The workshop will teach how to perform basic bike repairs and provide tips on navigating Houston by cycling. One lucky attendee will receive a one-year membership to Houston B-Cycle, Houston's bikeshare program. Earth Week will also feature a sewing 101 workshop at 2 p.m. April 20, a Crafty Coogs arts and crafts event using recycled materials for student residents at noon April 21 at Moody Towers, and a Siblings Day and Earth Day celebration on Saturday, April 22, at various residence halls throughout campus. April 21 will also mark the soft launch of Farm to Work, a new wellness program for UH employees that will make it easy and affordable to buy and pick up fresh, locally-grown produce on campus. Earth Week will conclude on Sunday, April 23, with a volunteer event at the UH Campus Community Garden. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers are encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle, long pants, close-toed shoes and a hat. Water, tools and insect repellant will be provided.
