An interview with Otu Inyang has been posted in the Operational Radiation Safety journal, a publication of the Health Physics Society that features peer-reviewed papers concerned with practical and applied health physics.
The Interview with a Radiation Safety Officer column presents a series of questions and answers in which experienced radiation safety officers provide readers with information about their background, philosophies, insights and secrets. The editor welcomes participation from established radiation safety officers, and thus chose to write about Inyang as an experienced radiation safety officer.
Inyang moved to the United States in 2003 and began working at the University of Houston in 2007. He gained much respect from co-workers and supervisors and was able to climb up the career ladder to a manager position in 2009.
When Director of Environmental Health and Life Safety Joe Tremont was asked to share his opinion regarding Inyang, he shared the following:
“I had the pleasure to start working with Otu in 2012 when I became interim director over Environmental Health and Life Safety. Otu made me feel welcome as soon as I started. This is one smart man, with not only his knowledge of radiation safety, but he also has a master’s degree and he is a certified safety professional. He is continually self-studying to better himself and our department. His parents were both school teachers and taught him the importance of education. Otu takes his position seriously and is a leader of our group showing everyone that not only do you need education but you must be ethical when making critical decisions. He has a very big heart and takes people’s feelings into account when doing his job at the University. This is something that just can’t be taught.”
