Shredding Program at UH More Affordable and Sustainable

The University of Houston has recently developed a program with Austin Task for affordable shredding that makes use of the same plant that handles the universitys closed-loop recycling program, Boise Paper.

This program offers a more reasonable rate for shredding services than previously experienced by the university. With this program, UH pays the greater of $35 for pickup or $.01 per pound of paper documents to be shredded. For non-paper items, UH pays the greater of $35 per pickup or $.07 per pound.

In addition to saving money for the cost of shredding, this program enables UH to receive overall credit for the amount of paper that is shredded and recycled a very beneficial distinction for a campus which is so dedicated to green initiatives.

In addition, all of the paper which is shredded is dedicated directly to local paper mills. Shredded paper from UH is taken to Boise Paper, the company that partners with the university in its Closed-Loop Recycling Program.

Closed-Loop Recycling advances sustainability by encouraging the use of more recycled paper. The university makes more money for each ton of recycled paper using this system.

To get involved in this program, simply place orders for bins using the following e-mail address: uofh@austintask.com. The contact for the Houston Office is Operations Manager Duane Davidson, who can be reached at 281-416-5177.

Departments can choose from three types of bins: 32-gallon console, 640 gallon and 96-gallon bins. Austin Task and the department will determine a pick up schedule at the time the order is placed. It can be weekly, bi-weekly or monthly depending on the amount of paper the department generates.

Working with Austin Task for shredding is another way the University of Houston seeks to promote and enhance sustainability on campus and beyond.
