Dietitian provides parents with advice on eating healthy

Sarah Feye, University of Houston Dining Services dietitian, gave a presentation to more than 30 parents of BOUNCE participants

The program took place Sept. 28. Her presentation included a description of a healthy meal using the MyPlate food guide and two hands-on demonstrations. The interactive demonstrations described the appropriate serving size of soda and how to make a quick and healthy snack.

BOUNCE, which stands for Behavior Opportunities Uniting Nutrition Counseling and Exercise, is a summer and after-school program at UH dedicated to empowering Hispanic and African-American girls ages 9 to 14 and their families to adopt a healthy lifestyle by incorporating healthy food choices, daily exercise, and positive self-esteem in a supportive environment.

"I think that good health and nutrition happens when the entire family unit is involved throughout the process," said Feye. "When parents are invested in a healthy lifestyle, their children become equally interested. I think BOUNCE is an incredibly impactful organization for this very reason; families learn about the importance of nutrition through fun, hands-on interactions. At home, the family can apply their knowledge when prepping family meals. At school, the girls can learn how to make healthful choices that affect their bodies positively in the long-term."

Feye hosts several events around campus to inform students about nutrition, and partners with other campus departments to help increase awareness of her programs. As part of UH Dining Services, she is able to meet with UH students, faculty, and staff for a complimentary one-on-one session to provide them with advice and suggestions on dietary needs.
