UH Dining participates in volunteer event

By Emily Fahner

UH Dining Services and UH Sports & Entertainment participated in the annual Aramark Building Community Day at Baker-Ripley Neighborhood Center in Houston on Sept. 17.

Baker-Ripley Neighborhood Center supports residents of the southwest Houston neighborhoods of Gulfton and Sharpstown and families with children attending local schools.

A partnership that began in 2007 between Aramark and Neighborhood Center has grown to a corporate-wide initiative resulting in the Aramark Building Community Day. This allows Aramark employees to take a break from their daily duties to give back to the local communities they serve.

“We are proud to participate in this event every year,” said Geoff Herbert, UH Dining resident district manager. “It allows for myself, as well as my staff, to take a step back and remember we must take care of the community around us.”

Volunteers from all Aramark lines of business in the Houston area had the opportunity to build gardens, paint murals on fences, repair playgrounds and prepare healthy meals. At the end of the day, volunteers were treated to performances by the students of the Baker-Ripley Charter School.

“It is heartwarming to see the children so excited to see all of the improvements made to the campus and know they will be able to enjoy it in the years to come,” Herbert said.

The next Aramark volunteer event will be held in December where the children of the community will enjoy a breakfast with Santa. For more information about Aramark’s community involvement, click here.
