Walk in the Dark Recap
The National Night Out/Walk in the
Dark event this past Tuesday was a
huge success. Over 1,000 students,
faculty and staff came out to Lynn
Eusan Park to participate in the
event. Tables were set up showcasing
the services and information that
the Department of Public Safety
provides to the campus community.
Individuals even had an opportunity
to experience the fatal vision
goggles. Fatal vision goggles are
used to impair your vision as it
would be if you were intoxicated.
Participants were given an
opportunity to shoot hoops and or
drive a scooter without the goggles
and then later with the goggles.
Fatal vision goggles were the hit of
the event. Department of Public
Safety personnel were on hand to
answer questions and provide tips on
various topics like crime prevention
on and off campus, fire safety and
safe dating practices.
Also showing their support for the
Department of Public Safety and the
University of Houston were:
University Services, Campus
Recreation, Health Center,
Counseling and Psychological
Services, Staff Council and
Information Technology to name a
few. Next years event will be even
bigger and better.
A little later in the evening the
Walk in the Dark took place. Over
100 people gathered to start the
walk at Lynn Eusan Park. The
students, faculty and staff were
broken up into 5 groups. Each group
walked the campus, discussed
concerns and identified areas that
made them feel unsafe. The
information gathered at the Walk in
the Dark will be presented to the
appropriate administrators on campus
for repair and or possible
implementation. In past years, the
reports generated from the Walk in
the Dark resulted in over $1,000,000
in repairs and or lighting on
campus.
Participants were placed into a
drawing for a free SGA t-shirt just
for coming out and joining in the
walk.
