Houston, October 5, 2009 The
campus recently got greener with the
addition of the new community garden
coordinator, Leah Wolfthal. Leahs
primary role is to foster community
involvement in the newly dedicated
and planted Cougar Community Garden
in Lynn Eusan Park. Her task will
include organizing and coordinating
volunteer involvement in regular
garden maintenance and special
events.
Leah has special plans for the
garden but notes that her first
priority is to get the garden to be
a healthy producer of vegetables to
be consumed in on-campus dining
facilities. The garden will be a
resource for learning about urban
sustainability, ecology and other
student and faculty research
interests, Leah added. It will
serve as a site for fun, reflection,
and for taking responsibility for
our environment.
The Cougar Community Garden program
was started in the spring of 2009 as
part of the University of Houstons
efforts towards sustainability. Its
purpose is to teach the campus
community where and how our food is
grown as well as to promote
sustainable gardening practices.
Knowing that in order for the garden
to be successful and serve this
purpose, Leah has been busy meeting
with several student organizations
including MVP, the Metropolitan
Volunteer Program. MVP has considerable interest in the
well-being of the garden and was a
great supporter at the garden
dedication on October 1.
You can get involved too. For more
