UH fire marshal invited to speak about Harvey at state conference

By Cindy Granier 283

University of Houston Fire Marshal Chris McDonald was invited to speak at the Texas Fire Marshals Conference about the University’s response to Hurricane Harvey.

The conference, which was held Oct. 15-19 in Austin, was an opportunity to learn about the latest trends in fire prevention and fire inspections. There were numerous opportunities to network with fire marshals from across the state, as well as meet vendors and learn about new products and services.

Environmental Health and Life Safety Director Joe Tremont accompanied McDonald, who gave a PowerPoint presentation created earlier by the UH Office of Emergency Management with input from the UH Fire Safety team.

The presentation included facts and information about Harvey, which impacted the Houston area in August 2017.

Points of discussion included emergency operations on campus, the storm’s impact to campus, what made this response different from others, campus-wide communications, mitigation, continuity of operations planning and lessons learned.
