UH tops in Texas in one RecycleMania category

When it comes to how much materials it recycles, no other college or university in the state does it better than the University of Houston.

UH placed first out of 21 participating schools in Texas in this springs national RecycleMania competitions gorilla category, which recognizes schools that recycle the highest combined gross tonnage of paper, cardboard, bottles and cans, no matter the size of the campus.

The university collected 471,300 pounds of materials. Thats nearly 61,000 pounds more than the states second-place finisher, the University of Texas at Austin. Nationally, UH came in 36th place in the gorilla category out of 365 schools. The competition ran Feb. 3 through March 30.

The university also placed fifth in the state in the per capita classic category, which measures the average amount of pounds of recycled materials per person on campus. In the grand champion category, which measures weight recycled compared to total waste, UH came in seventh place in the state. The university also participated in the waste minimization category and, with UH Dining Services, the food service organics category with food donations.
