HRM GREEN TEAM AND PSI CHI WIN RECYCLEMANIA TEAM COMPETITIONS

Congratulations to the HRM Green Team and Psi Chi for their efforts during the RecycleMania on-campus team competition! Each team won $100 gift cards to local restaurants for earning the most points during their recycling awareness campaigns.

This year, GreenUH switched up the team competition and challenged organizations to run their own awareness campaigns in order to boost recycling efforts on campus during the national RecycleMania competition. Eight teams signed on to compete from February 13 through March 30.

The new awareness-focused competition generated a lot of fun and excitement for students, especially around the use of Facebook or social media in general, and the freedom for students to choose their own events, for instance a fashion or art event, said Leah Wolfthal, Program Coordinator for Sustainability.

Psi Chi came out on top for the Sustainability Savvy Shasta Division for groups of 21+ members. They won a $100 gift card to Ruggles Green, a sponsor of the contest. The HRM Green Team won the Conservation Houstonian Division for groups of 6-20 members earning them a $100 gift card from another contest sponsor, Snap Kitchen.

During the contest, teams earned points by promoting green initiatives and programs including hosting events, posting on social media, and participating in GreenUH RecycleMania events. HRM Green Team earned a total of 844 points. They hosted activities including Green Movie Mondays where Hilton College students were invited to watch movies focused on sustainability. Psi Chi earned 536 for their promotions including the Recycle-Get-a-Candy in which the group set up stations by recycling bins and rewarded people who recycled.

The winning teams received a certificate and their prizes during the RecycleMania Closing Ceremony on April 5 at the UC Satellite. For more information on recycling or green initiatives on campus, visit www.uh.edu/green.
