UH KEEPS UP WITH THE COMPETITION IN RECYCLEMANIA 2012


The results are in and UH made a strong showing in this year�s national RecycleMania challenge. UH ranked in the top 10 in Texas in 3 out of 4 competition categories.

The national RecycleMania competition challenges colleges and universities each spring to collect as much recycled material as possible and reduce waste. The total amount of recycling UH collected during the competition is equivalent to 122 metric tons of CO2 equivalent which is equal to 65 cars off the road or the energy consumption of 32 households.

This year, 605 schools signed on for the eight-week challenge from February 5 through March 31. UH finished 238th of all colleges and universities. Overall, the participating schools reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 148,897 metric tons.

The University of Houston competed in four categories: grand champion, per capita, waste minimization and gorilla. Out of all participating teams in Texas, UH placed 6th in waste minimization, 8th in gorilla, 10th in grand champion and 12th in per capita categories.
