UH KEEPS UP WITH THE COMPETITION IN RECYCLEMANIA 2012
The
results are in and UH made a strong showing in this years
national RecycleMania challenge. UH ranked in the top 10 in
Texas in 3 out of 4 competition categories.
The national RecycleMania competition challenges colleges and
universities each spring to collect as much recycled material as
possible and reduce waste. The total amount of recycling UH
collected during the competition is equivalent to 122 metric
tons of CO2 equivalent which is equal to 65 cars off the road or
the energy consumption of 32 households.
This year, 605 schools signed on for the eight-week challenge
from February 5 through March 31. UH finished 238th of all
colleges and universities. Overall, the participating schools
reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 148,897 metric tons.
The University of Houston competed in four categories: grand
champion, per capita, waste minimization and gorilla. Out of all
participating teams in Texas, UH placed 6th in waste
minimization, 8th in gorilla, 10th in grand champion and 12th in
per capita categories.
