UH Enjoys Earth Day Carnival on Campus
On April 22nd, UH celebrated Earth
Day on campus, celebrating the green
initiatives which have transformed
the University of Houston into one
of the most sustainable campuses in
the nation.
According to the "Princeton Review's
Guide to 286 Green Colleges",
published just before Earth Day, UH
ranks as one of the most
environmentally friendly colleges.
And at the Earth Day Carnival, it
was easy to see why.
Over 20 tables were set up in Butler
Plaza on a sunny Thursday afternoon
to educate the campus community
about the green efforts being made
on campus, and opportunities to be
involved.
UH Information Technology, Public
Safety, Recycling, Environmental
Club and the Library were available
to tell students about their part in
making the campus sustainable.
Demos of how to make recycled paper
and compost were informative for
those watching and participating,
and eco tours were given of the
green areas on campus, as well as
the UH power plant.
A weather balloon was launched by
students in the atmospheric science
program, and an Earth Day birthday
cake was served in order to
commemorate 40 years of this
celebration.
UH green has succeeded once again
in providing a fun-ducational Earth
Day awareness celebration, said UH
student Terry Huang at the carnival.
All the games were really fun and
brought awareness to our earth.
Recycling games made of all recycled
materials were thoroughly enjoyed by
all, and a recycled art gallery
displayed pieces made by students
during the RecycleMania competition.
UH also announced the results from
the annual RecycleMania competition,
as it ran against hundreds of
colleges across the nation. UH
boasted first place in Texas, first
place in Conference USA, and 38th
nation-wide using actual weights.
Its exciting to see the UH
community so receptive to the green
programs on campus, said Maria
Honey, Marketing Manager for
University Services. This was our
biggest and best green event to
date.
This was a proud achievement for the
University of Houston in its second
year to participate, and the
University looks forward to
continuing to make sustainable
practices an everyday effort.
