Java City Converts to Fair Trade by Fall 2009

UH Dining Services announced that plans are underway to convert the Java City in the University Center to Fair Trade coffee by fall 2009.

This conversion means that in the fall all brewed coffee and espresso drinks at the Java City will be using Fair Trade Certified Coffee.

This is part of the sustainability efforts of UH Dining Services, said Geoff Herbert, UH Dining Services Operations Director. In addition to Fair Trade coffee, we have implemented tray-less dining and pre-consumer composting in our dining hall kitchens, partnered with the universitys produce garden, participated in RecycleMania, celebrated Earth Day with special menus, and developed a program to encourage more students to eat in the facilities instead of using to-go containers.

Annually approximately 30 percent of the coffee purchased by the University is Fair Trade certified and there are four locations on campus that only serve Fair Trade coffee. These include the dining halls at Oberholtzer Hall and Moody Towers as well as Cougar Grounds and Shastas Cones and More. Additionally, Fair Trade Certified coffee is also available at Einstein Bros. Bagels in Philip Guthrie Hoffman Hall, the C-Stores, the Starbucks in the Bauer College of Business and the Starbucks located in the University Center Satellite.

Dining Services continues to offer solutions to the campus that reflect the universitys commitment to sustainability, said Emily Messa, assistant vice president for university services, who heads the Campus Sustainability Task Force. This department continues to raise the sustainability bar for the rest of the university.
