NEW GREEN UH INTERN ON A MISSION TO GET INVOLVED
Proud
to be a Coog, Bethel Glumac is
determined to get involved in her
school. She has filled her schedule
with a variety of interests and is
quickly being recognized as a leader
on campus, even as a freshman. Not
only is this Cougar Village resident
busy, but she is also ambitious,
talented, smart and now can add
conscientious to her list of traits
after becoming the newest addition
to the Green UH team.
A communications and media
productions major, Glumac began her
internship with Green UH as part of
the new Sustaining the City course
(HON 439H, 24024) offered this
Spring. The course gives students
the opportunity to get hands on
experience and work with government
and nonprofit agencies as well as
programs and groups within the
university dedicated to
sustainability while earning credit
for the class. Glumac said she
signed up for the course because the
internship aspect appealed to her
and she felt learning the elements
of sustaining a city would be an
important part of the communications
field.
I would like to learn more about
the typical day and job of someone
involved in public relations and
communications to see if it is
something I could see myself
spending the rest of my life doing,
Glumac said.
Glumac began her internship just in
time for RecycleMania. As part of
her duties, she will be learning to
promote the Green UH message through
press releases, photographs,
marketing strategies and through
participating in events throughout
the semester.
Not only is this internship
convenient because it is on campus,
the people working there are very
amiable, and I feel I can learn a
lot from them. I think the part I
will find most enjoyable is coming
up with communication strategies and
working on my interviewing and
writing skills, she said.
A League City native, Glumac has a
long history with UH. Her father has
worked for the university for 25
years and she also has a sister here
studying engineering. She said she
is proud of the strides UH has made
in their green initiatives.
I admire the sustainability
movement here at UH. They are doing
a good job of keeping up. Its
important to show students that
their university is cognizant of
present-day issues, such as
recycling. It can really increase
school pride. Also, last years
first place trophy (in Texas for
RecycleMania) for UH showed the
rest of the nation that we are
serious and competitive contenders, Glumac said.
On top of her internship, Glumac
also works as a copy editor and
occasional writer for The Daily
Cougar. She is also the
secretary/treasurer of Residence
Halls Association, a group that
creates events to bring all the
residence halls together, and
completes at least eight office
hours a week for the organization.
Glumac is part of Honors Advocates
and the Student Government of the
Honors College. This semester, her
involvement has also extended to
reactivate African-American Honor
Student Association (AAHSA), and she
was also selected to become part of
the Orientation Team at UH.
In what spare time she has left,
Glumac shows her multitude of
talents through her hobbies.
Recently, she formed a passion for
volleyball and became captain of the
intramural team last semester and
made the club volleyball team this
spring. She is active in her church
where she attends church-related
activities and plays the piano.
I can also play the viola, but have
recently found the piano to be more
enjoyable. I also enjoy reading,
writing fiction, just hanging out
every once in a while, getting to
know people, baking and challenging
myself, she said. Oh, and Im a
cat person.
