University Travel Insurance Discontinued

The University of Houston has been providing accidental death & dismemberment insurance for faculty and staff while traveling (domestic & international travel) on University business for a number of years. For expense control reasons this insurance has been discontinued effective March 1, 2011.

Since this insurance policy is being discontinued, it is no longer necessary to send Risk Management copies of Travel Requests for international travel, as required by MAPP 04.02.01B. This policy will be updated to reflect this change.

In accordance with MAPP, all overnight travel must be approved before the trip on a Travel Request. Non-overnight transportation, including intercity mileage to business meetings in town and non-overnight business trips out of town in ones own car, do not require a Travel Request.

Please note that worldwide coverage to faculty and staff for injuries that occur during the course and scope of employment are covered by Workers Compensation. In addition, JP Morgan Chase (current Travel Card provider) and Citibank (future Travel Card provider) automatically provide travel insurance at no additional charge when airfare is paid with a UH Travel Card.

Even if UH does not pay for an overnight trip, it is prudent to complete a Travel Request in case it is later needed for a Workers Compensation or Travel Card insurance claim.
