STUDENT SPOTLIGHT NANCY BORJA
Family has been a huge influence
on Facilities Planning and Constructions student worker Nancy
Borja who has made it her inspiration for both her educational
and career objectives.
Born in Houston and raised in Sugar Land by her parents, both
from Mexico, Borja came from a large family with 4 siblings and
46 first cousins. She is currently a nutrition and foods senior
at UH, and when she graduates in May 2013 she will be only the
third in her family to receive a college degree. She chose to
study a subject that is close to her heart and also became
involved in two related student organizations, Student Nutrition
Association and the American Chemical Society.
I like to help others that have health impairments because of
the health issues within my own family - my father has diabetes-
and thats why I serve in these organizations, she said.
Borja balances her studies and involvement in student
organizations with her current position with Facilities Planning
and Construction. She discovered the job opening through the
universitys career center and joined the team in January 2012.
She assists the team with general office duties including data
entry, running errands, assisting on office projects and picking
up and delivering contracts for the contract coordinators.
I am learning things here that I will apply in my career later,
for example, how to interact in an office environment after I
graduate and get a full time job, she said.
Borja said she likes the people she works with and enjoys
working on campus because it is close to her classes and her
supervisors are willing to be flexible with her hours to comply
with her school schedule. Kimberly Barras, administrative
coordinator for Facilities Planning and Construction, oversees
her daily activities.
Nancy Borja is an excellent worker and needs little to no
supervision. She completes all of the requests given to her in a
very timely manner and does a great job! We have come to depend
on her and know she will complete any task she is given. We are
very lucky to have her! Barras said.
Outside of campus, Borja said she also enjoys hanging out with
friends, baking sweet treats, watching football and going
dancing. She also enjoys participating in 5K runs around Houston
and has completed runs to support medical research for ovarian
cancer and diabetes, the March of Dimes organization as well as
participated in the Navidad en el Barrio and running of the
bulls.
After graduation, Borja said she hopes to obtain an internship
in the dietician field in order to experience what graduate
school will be all about before she pursues a masters degree in
nutrition. She said her dream job would be to work in a hospital
as a registered dietician where she can continue her objective
of helping people to get better.
