EARLY TEXTBOOK ORDERS CAN SAVE STUDENTS MONEY
Students can save money and
prepare for the upcoming year when textbook orders are submitted
early before the start of the new semester. The UH Bookstore is
working to collect all textbook adoptions for fall courses in
order to provide students with as many affordable options
available in a textbook as well as to comply with the federal
Higher Education Opportunity Act.
During the Spring 2012 semester, the UH Bookstore saved students
$331,927 on their textbooks by offering textbook content in
several formats such as rental, digital, new or used. When
textbook commitments are provided early, the UH Bookstore has
enough time to order all available options for that book which
provides a tremendous help to students pockets. For instance,
if a rental textbook is an available option, a student can save
up to 50% compared to the cost of a new textbook. Also, by
having the orders submitted early to the UH Bookstore, materials
can be ordered and shipped so that all options are in stock and
available to students by the first day of class.
Students can also anticipate the costs of textbooks and
materials before they sign up for a class with early textbook
adoptions. Also, if a textbook will be used the following
semester, the student can even receive up to 50 percent of the
original selling price during buybacks.
A textbook provision was added to the Higher Education
Opportunity Act (HEOA) in July 2010 that included stipulations
on textbook assignments in order to help students know the
textbook costs for a course and allow them time to find
alternative purchasing options. Texas also recently passed the
House Bill 33 that provides similar stipulations on textbook
adoptions which will go into effect for Fall 2012. Currently,
only 45 percent of textbook orders have been submitted to the UH
Bookstore. Even if a course will not require a textbook, the
UH Bookstore will still need to be notified in order for the
university to be compliant.
Turn in textbook orders to the UH Bookstore for Fall 2012 in
order to continue to help students save more money. To provide
course textbook information, submit textbook requests online at
www.uh.bncollege.com under the Faculty tab or send
an email to
tm510@bncollege.com. Please
include the book title, ISBN, course/section and enrollment
information with all requests.
