STUDENT SPOTLIGHT � GINGER UNEGBU


Never underestimate the power of a smile. While working at the UH Department of Public Safety, Ginger Unegbu learned from the staff that something as simple as a smile can make a positive difference in the workplace. After working with the team for over a year, Unegbu has fit right in to the family and even earned herself a nickname.

�As a quick learner, Cougar Ginger adapts very smoothly into the DPS family,� said Jacqueline Chee, Financial Coordinator for UH Department of Public Safety. �She is dependable, friendly and a great team player.�

Unegbu found the posting for the position after searching the UH website for a summer job. She was soon hired and began assisting the staff with various office duties while attending classes at UH.

�It�s like a family here. They make me feel really comfortable,� Unegbu said.

She said at previous jobs, she didn�t have as much interaction with her coworkers, but the DPS staff always shows they care about her, inquiring about her studies and complimenting her smile. Coincidently, she has decided she would like to become a dentist after graduation, changing her previous plan of going into physical therapy.

�I want to become a dentist because I love smiles,� Unegbu said. �That�s the first thing I look at when I meet a person is their teeth. A smile is what makes a person.�

Unegbu is the daughter of Nigerian parents and grew up in the Houston area attending Thurgood Marshall High School in Fort Bend. She has a competitive nature and loves to work out and play sports, especially volleyball and basketball. Unegbu will graduate from UH with a degree in Kinesiology in December 2011.
