Planned electrical outages scheduled for March 14-15

On Jan.12, lightning struck one of the utility poles for the Cougar 2 primary feeder, causing a power blip in half of the buildings on campus. As a result, the university will schedule a planned electrical outage for March 14-15 to make necessary repairs to the electrical distribution system, as well as complete necessary preventative testing to the distribution system.

During these two days, building occupants can expect three power outages of one hour each during building load transfers - tentatively occurring Friday morning (March 14), Friday evening, and Saturday morning (March 15).

Building coordinators are being notified now so appropriate planning steps can be taken for each building. Facilities Management will work with the coordinators to accommodate special emergency power needs for each facility’s selective labs or equipment.

How building coordinators can help:

  • Share this information with all building occupants as soon as possible and ascertain their emergency power backup needs during the repair and outage period (i.e. generators, other emergency power needs, etc.).
  • Report the emergency power needs of your building occupants to Karl Keilbach, electrical supervisor, at kkeilbac@Central.uh.edu or 713-743-5606, and the Facilities Service Center at csc@central.uh.edu or 713-743-4948.
