Tandoori Nite extends hours to offer halal dinner options

Tandoori Nite has extended its hours of operation to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday to help better serve students who adhere to a halal diet.

Tandoori Nite, which is located in the UC Satellite, offers students a variety of menu options including gluten and soy-free entrees, vegetarian and vegan options and halal meat.

The change in hours comes after a request was brought to the Food Service Advisory Committee last semester.

Demand for halal options at UH has grown in recent years. Halal foods are those that are allowed under Islamic dietary guidelines. With UH being one of the most diverse universities in the country, it is no surprise that many students ask for halal.

Two campus food trucks recently began offering halal meat to meet this demand. Third Coast Steak Sandwiches and Coreanos can substitute halal chicken in any menu item to accommodate this need.

"The need for halal on our campus is definitely of importance," said Sarah Feye UH Dining Services dietitian. "We are one of the most diverse colleges and cities in the nation; we want to reflect it by offering an array of food choices. Accommodating different diets is something UH Dining Services strives to improve upon, and we are heavily looking into adding more halal options in the future."
