New wellness wall helps students stay healthy

University of Houston Dining Services has unveiled a new Wellness Wall in Cougar Woods Dining Hall.

The Wellness Wall, unveiled Jan. 28, is part of a new Healthy for Life campaign that provides diners with the tools to choose healthy options in dining halls, as well as educational events to engage diners through social media, health fairs and culinary demos.

Caroline Sullivan, registered dietitian and UH Dining Services nutritionist, said, The Healthy for Life program is being implemented to help create a culture of wellness. It is designed to enable, educate and encourage our diners to make healthy choices.

The Wellness Wall encompasses a 9-foot display with information on the Healthy for Life Program that includes Just4U nutrition messaging. The Just4U messaging contains healthy menu selections that are developed and evaluated by culinary experts. The messages on the Wellness Wall help diners find healthy choices like low-fat foods, vegetarian and vegan choices, or baked items instead of fried.

The Healthy for Life initiative allows for easy navigation in the dining halls by placing nutritional cards next to every menu item. The nutritional cards include matching symbols from the Wellness Wall, allowing for easy identification.

In addition, the wall will have a rotating panel that will be updated frequently with health and wellness information, along with special events and programs around campus.

UH Dining Services is dedicated to providing healthy choices while informing its customers. The Wellness Wall is just one tool that UH Dining provides. Customers can also check out the UH Dining website and mobile app that helps them find nutritional information and the dietitians Healthy Picks for both retail and residential dining.
