TECHNOLOGY COMMONS
UIT Computer Lab Services
HOUSTON, Jan. 29, 2010 The
Technology Commons, UHs second
largest and most complete computer
lab, offers students access to a
number of services 24 hours a day,
seven days a week (except official
UH holidays). In addition to its 144
computers (124 PCs, 20 Macs), the
Commons supports dozens of computer
kiosks located around campus.
All Tech Commons services are free,
with the exception of prints, which
run $0.01 per black and white print
and $0.20 per color print. Other
popular services include headphone
checkout, scanning, password resets,
assistance with UH Wireless access,
and the recently launched laptop
checkout program. Fifty Dell laptops
are currently available on a
first-come, first-served basis for
up to 48 hours. These Wi-Fi-equipped
laptops have Microsoft Office 2007
and Windows XP preloaded. Our
laptop checkouts have been very well
received, said Alby Rose, Interim
Manager of Technology Commons.
Were averaging over 10 checkouts
per day and have had 133 checkouts.
Were seeing a lot of repeat
business, which tells us that this
service is really popular among our
students.
Attendance at Tech Commons also
steadily increased this year to
nearly 1,000 each Monday through
Thursday, and over 200 on Friday,
Saturday, and Sunday. Six full-time
and 14 part-time student workers
take care of the facility.
The Technology Commons is located in
room 58 in the basement of the M.D.
Anderson Library, only accessible
through the east entrance of the
Library adjacent to the University
Center. For information about the
Technology Commons, please call
