Green Hints - Hunt down and replace
incandescent lamps
Replace high energy consuming
traditional incandescent bulbs with
compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) if
you have not already done so. CFLs
use up to 75 percent less energy,
and they last almost ten times
longer than incandescent bulbs.
Although CFLs have a higher initial
price, they provide a timely
payback, particularly in lights that
stay on for long periods of time.
Consider soft white CFL which emit
warmer light if you have concerns
that the CFL light will appear too
blue.
One drawback of CFLs is that they
contain very small amount (4
milligrams) of mercury. No mercury
is released when the bulbs are
intact or in use, however bulbs
should be disposed off appropriately
after its intended life.
To take the next step in being
green, you may want to consider
light emitting diodes commonly
referred as LEDs. LED lighting is
rapidly evolving technology. In
addition to not containing mercury,
LEDs offer longer life with minimal
energy use. These lamps are now
available at several stores and also
online. Although still quite
expensive, the prices of LEDs will
come down as the demand increases.
