Sidewalks around parking lot 19D set to close soon

By Jessica Mize

Pedestrian sidewalk completion scheduled along University Drive

Various sidewalks around parking lot 19D, located behind Calhoun Lofts, soon will close as construction of the new Multidisciplinary Research and Engineering Building gets underway.

The sidewalks within the construction fence, outlined in the aerial image, will be inaccessible for the duration of the project, which is slated to be completed by early 2016. Alternative routes have been designated and are highlighted in the image.

The new building is a joint venture between the Division of Research and the Cullen College of Engineering. It will have 120,000 gross square feet for offices, research labs, training facilities and other uses.

“The building will have special features to assist with various types of research,” said Project Manager Kelly Buehler. “Five labs have been specially designed to include vibration isolation slabs for sensitive equipment like lasers.”

Helping the $51 million project become a reality are contractor Tellepsen Builders and design team Stantec.
