Finals Fiesta to Give Students a Welcome Break from Studies

A few new wrinkles are being added this spring to a popular tradition that gives University of Houston students a much-needed break from studying for final exams.

The event, now in its 10th year, happens at the end of the spring and fall semesters and is usually known as Finals Mania. For this spring, its name is being changed to Finals Fiesta, reflecting its proximity to Cinco de Mayo. It will take place in its usual location – the Elizabeth D. Rockwell Pavilion in the M.D. Anderson Library – on Monday, April 30, from 8 to 10 p.m.

After a decade of serving hungry and weary students stacks of pancakes and turkey sausage links, the event is undergoing a menu overhaul for the spring and will now include a variety of tacos, including beef, chicken, portabello mushroom, and egg and cheese. There will also be a chips and salsa bar, and three flavors of aguas frescas. Other drinks, including coffee, iced coffee, water and sodas, will continue to be served, as will a variety of snacks. There will also be one serving station offering up red velvet pancakes.

“We hope students enjoy what we are doing for the spring edition by adding variety to the menu and a Cinco de Mayo flair to this already great tradition,” said Neil Hart, executive director of Auxiliary Services. “Last fall, we offered vegan pancakes and a photo booth to help enhance the student experience. We will continue to try to be creative as we move forward and are always open to feedback and suggestions from students.”

As in years past, more than 1,500 students are expected to attend the event. Students are asked to bring their Cougar Card ID to get in, but nobody will be turned away if they forget to bring it.

Plenty of food will be prepared, but because of the event’s popularity, students are encouraged not to arrive late, as food will only be served as long as supplies last.

Volunteers help make the event a success. Those who would like to sign up to help can do so online.

Finals Fiesta is being sponsored by Auxiliary Services, Dining Services, UH Libraries, Canteen Vending and Coca-Cola.
