Students, Faculty and Staff Take Part in Bike to UH Day

Bike to UH DayThe weather couldn’t have been any better for Bike to UH Day.

“There was no rain, it was cool out and breezy, but not too windy,” said Sarah Kelly, program manager for the Office of Sustainability. “It was also a little overcast, so the sun wasn’t beating down. It was just perfect.”

The ideal conditions were perhaps one reason the event, which took place May 1, was such a success. More than 40 people commuted to campus that Friday, and another two dozen took part in a mid-day social ride to Hermann Park and back.

The event, which was organized by BikeHouston and the Office of Sustainability, kicked off National Bike Month and Stress Free Finals Week.

From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., representatives from both groups manned tables in Butler Plaza to serve refreshments to those who rode their bikes to campus that day and to provide biking information and maps to interested members of the UH community. It also gave biking enthusiasts a chance to talk and mingle with others who share the same interest.

One of those enthusiasts was student Lauren Klich, who works as the bike program assistant for the Office of Sustainability.

“It was so awesome to see so many cyclists pull together from the same campus,” Klich said.

Those who participated were a mix of students, faculty and staff. Some rode in from as far away as the Heights, Montrose and the Texas Medical Center. Some commute regularly by bike. For others, it was the first time they had ever done so. Many rode in as a group after signing up at an events page created by BikeHouston.

Kelly said the plan is to make the event an annual one.

“We want to do it every May to kick off Bike Month,” she said. “Based on the feedback and interest from this first one, we expect it will grow and become even better next year.”
