K. Chu's guidance and he currently has 3 graduate students working toward their Ph.D. degree. (2) A Researcher: He has over 390 Journal publications, 12 book-chapters, one book (Backscattering Spectrometry), and co-editor of three books. A frequently invited speaker, he gave over 120 invited talks over the decades. (3) An Inventor: He holds 26 US patents in the areas of thin film, ion Implantation, Semiconductors, and High Temperature Superconductor applications such as Levitation Bearings, Levitation Flywheels, Satellite Momentum Wheels, Lunar Telescope Mount, etc. He has 2 US pending patents on semiconductor, on nano structures, and on neutron generation related topics. (3) An Administrator: He had management training from IBM in 1979. He served as Deputy Director of TcSUH (89-97), Research Director (2003-). He serves on the Scientific Board of PTV Sciences, a Venture Capital group. (4) External Services: He has served on several Review panels for NSF, and DOE, on various research programs reviews. (5) Awards: Wei-Kan Chu, an American Physical Society Fellow, has been the Distinguished Achievement Award from Baylor University, Waco, Texas in 1991, the Distinguished Achievement Award from the Association of American-Chinese Professionals, 1994, the Superconductivity Award of Excellence for Outstanding Individual Accomplishment by the World Congress on Superconductivity in 1994, and the ISTEC/MRS International Workshop on Superconductivity, Material/Device Performance Award in recognition of superior performance in the category of Bearing Applications in 1995. In 1997 he received two additional ISTEC/MRS International Workshop on Superconductivity Material/Product Performance Awards, in recognition of superior performance in the category of Thin Films, and Strong Pinning Specimens. Also in 1997 and in 1998 he was honored by his alma mater, and received 1997 and 1998 “Outstanding Alumni” awards from National Cheng-Kung University North America Alumni Foundation Inc., and National Cheng-Kung University, respectively.
