03/21/01 WED Hoof-and-mouth crisis shows how far we've come

A 31 15 THOMAS R. DeGREGORI THE 20th century was characterized

by economic  and technological change of unprecedented rapidity as shown

by all economic indicators. The non-economic indicators are just as spectacular– life
expectancy, health and increases in per-capita food supply, which more than
accommodated population growth that virtually all "experts" believed could
not be fed. Both the developed and developing worlds added nearly 30 years
in average life expectancy, and strange as it may seem, the longer we live,
the lower percentage of our lives we spend with disabilities. Agriculture
had the additional challenge of putting nutrients into soil to feed plants
so crops could be grown to feed the growing population. Paradoxically,
these gains are largely denied, if only by implication, and the science and
technology that allowed them to happen have been under attack for almost
the entire century. The alleged dangers of modern life have become
conventional wisdom to large segments of the population, and nowhere is
that more true than in agriculture and food supply. This is clearly evident
in a multitude of responses to the hoof-and-mouth disease crisis, as it is
being attributed to some fault of modern agriculture, which could allegedly
be cured by a return to a more benign, eco-friendly organic agriculture.

07/14/00 FRI Former enemies U.S., Vietnam sign trade pact / Clinton says
broader agreement `will speed opening to the world' BUSINESS 1 21 KRISSAH
WILLIAMS The United States and Vietnam signed a historic agreement Thursday
that will give the countries normal trade relations for the first time
since the end of the Vietnam War. The agreement will reduce tariffs on
goods and services and improve trade relations between the former enemies,
government officials said.

09/12/99 SUN Krugman makes sense of dizzying economy ZEST 18 24 THOMAS R.
DeGREGORI ``THE RETURN OF DEPRESSION ECONOMICS.'' By Paul Krugman. Norton,
$23.95. WHEN Paul Krugman speaks, world leaders listen. ``The Return of
Depression Economics'' is another example of why we should, too. Examining
global economics through the prism of the recent Asian crisis, the
respected international-trade theorist again demonstrates his ability to
present the most complex issues concisely, lucidly and without
oversimplification.

08/29/99 SUN Why do we so easily believe the sky is falling? ZEST 25 33
THOMAS R. DeGREGORI THE CULTURE OF FEAR: Why Americans Are Afraid of the
Wrong Things. By Barry Glassner. Basic Books, $25. THE safer we get, the
more unsafe we feel, even though the evidence is overwhelming that we live
longer, healthier lives than any humans in history. Once upon a time,
conservatives promoting old-fashioned values were more likely than others
to distrust the latest in technology and science. Sometime in the late
1960s or early '70s, liberals who once welcomed and often championed
technology and change were seduced by the counterculture, environmentalists
and others into a fear of modern technology and its products.

bigger brain, author says zest 21 25 THOMAS R. DeGREGORI THE HAND: How Its
Use Shapes the Brain, Language, and Human Culture. By Frank R. Wilson.
Pantheon, $30. WESTERN culture has a long tradition of what American
philosopher John Dewey considered the artificial dualism between mind and
body. To Dewey this dualism was rooted in the social prejudice that favored
"thinkers" over those who worked with their hands. Many of these sentiments
came to us through our classical Greek heritage. Plato and Aristotle would
have denied citizenship to peasants, artisans and mechanics. Plato thought
thinkers would not wish their daughters to marry a worker's sons. Xenophon
said those who tended the fires carried "a social stigma" and were "rightly
dishonored" in the Greek cities.

12/14/97 SUN At Christmas dinner, let us be thankful for pesticides and
safe food OUTLOOK 4 29 THOMAS R. DeGREGORI THE holiday season is a time
when we count our blessings. It is also a time when many are nostalgic
about a lost past when we were eating purer food, drinking cleaner water
and living longer, happier lives. Under a few Christmas trees will be books
like Spoiled: The Dangerous Truth About a Food Chain Gone Haywire, which
tries to convince us that our food is contaminated and threatening us with
pathogens that are getting more lethal. Others would have us worry about
carcinogenic "chemicals" in our diet or in the air we breathe. And who of
us has not seen on TV or heard on the radio or read in the newspaper about
those who have taken up "organic" farming and are producing clean,
wholesome, nutritious and delicious food at a "reasonable price"? In sum,
modern life is dangerous and technology is killing us and we have to turn
to a more "natural" path for salvation.

12/07/97 SUN History vital to understand Tibet conflict ZEST 25 29 THOMAS
R. DEGREGORI TIBETAN NATION: A History of Tibetan Nationalism and
Sino-Tibetan Relations. By Warren W. Smith Jr. Westview Press, $29.95
paperback. IN the 1950s "Afghanistanism" was a journalistic pejorative for
the practice of covering events in distant lands as a way of avoiding more
controversial issues closer to home. But in 1978 Afghanistan became part of
the Cold War and a hot topic. It still remains in the news.

02/01/95 WED A currency event/Blacks will show cash clout/Leaders to track
flow of money BUSINESS 1 16 PAMELA YIP Black community leaders launched an
effort Tuesday to provide a dramatic example of African American purchasing
power. The Houston branch of the National Association for the Advancement
of Colored People designated February "Black Dollar Days" and asked blacks
to use Susan B. Anthony dollars and $2 bills when making purchases in order
to demonstrate blacks' purchasing power.

08/14/94 SUN Houstonians better opening their wallets than pantries to
world's needy OUTLOOK 4 16 THOMAS R. DeGREGORI HOUSTONIANS hoping to help
alleviate the suffering in Rwanda and Haiti should open their wallets and
not their pantries if they really want to do some good. Callous as it
sounds, the best way to have a positive impact is to send money through
reputable private voluntary organizations and not send food, clothing or
medicine directly overseas. People are starving in Rwanda but food
collected in Houston probably won't get to them. Airports at Goma, Kigali
and Entebbe are so tight that shipments won't get through unless those in
charge are assured they carry a top priority item and that there is some
mechanism for distribution to those in need.

07/25/93 SUN Humans must challenge nature or perish OUTLOOK 1 26 THOMAS R.
DeGREGORI THE unfolding tragedy of the floods this summer in the river
systems of the upper Midwest of the United States has brought forth the
usual rhetoric about the futility of fighting "nature," or of an
anthropomorphized "nature" taking revenge for our violations of her. While
many of these comments by broadcast and print journalists, conservationists
and even by the president are more harmless rhetoric than reality, there
remains an underlying simplistic technology-bashing theme that many are
quick to exploit. For technology bashers, every disaster is an opportunity
to blame past human technological actions and to put forward an agenda that
would have us return to a past that never existed. A clearer understanding
of the issues involved is necessary before we allow the true believers to
dominate the discussion and thereby set the agenda for action.

04/21/93 WED FOR THE EARTH/Planet's special day needs some cleaning up
HOUSTON 1 18 CYNTHIA THOMAS AFTER the roller coaster rides at AstroWorld,
the puppet shows and the kiddie concerts, do Earth Day celebrants have any
energy left for the contemplation of the planet? Now that the actual day is
Thursday, here's the dirt: Earth Day could use some cleaning up.

11/10/91 SUN The clouded crystal ball: Jacques Attali peers into the future
ZEST 15 17 THOMAS R. DeGREGORI "MILLENNIUM/Winners and Losers in the Coming
World Order." By Jacques Attali. Times Books, $17. NOT too many decades
ago, future books tended toward a technological utopianism. Today they tend
to fall in one of several categories: the trend-spotters, the population
and ecological catastrophists and the pickers of winners and losers in the
global economic race between the United States, Japan and other established
or emerging economic powerhouses.

10/13/91 SUN Columbus' achievement: Important thing is he came back ZEST 19
22 THOMAS R. DeGREGORI THE MYSTERIOUS HISTORY OF COLUMBUS/An Exploration of
the Man, the Myth, the Legacy. By John Noble Wilford. Knopf, $24. FOURTEEN
ninety-two plus 500 is almost upon us. The 500th year begins this month,
and the flood tide of books on Christopher Columbus and the "discovery" of
America is arriving. One could expect that a book on Columbus by John Noble
Wilford would be among the best of the lot, and one is not disappointed by
The Mysterious History of Columbus. Wilford shows how our view of Columbus
has changed through the centuries. In the first 100 years following his
life and work, Columbus was not widely credited with the "discovery" of the
"New World." Later, many not only paid him homage but also tried to claim
him as their own.

04/25/90 WED All environmentalists are not anti-technology B 11 2 CURTIS
CLEMENSON I must disagree with the premise of "Self-indulgent nonsense
clouds over Earth Day" written by Thomas R. DeGregori (Outlook, April 19).
He refers to environmentalists as anti-technology "back to nature
noblemen." I have been involved with the Sierra Club and Rain Forest Action
Network and have not met even one environmentalist who would like to turn
back the clock 100 years. We are all in agreement that the appropriate use
of modern technology and science can benefit mankind.

04/19/90 THU Self-indulgent nonsense clouds over Earth Day A 25 14 THOMAS
R. DeGREGORI ONE hundred years ago, water we drank was likely to be

died of infectious diseases now virtually eliminated. Manure littered city

Thursday that even as the nation celebrated the anniversary of one of its
most spectacular technological triumphs, it was forced to confront the
failure of a much simpler technology, the jet airplane. The hoopla
surrounding the 20th anniversary of the moon landing, including the
presidential announcement that America will return to the moon for the

high relief.

Britain's Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has already declared a moral and
intellectual victory. Added to the standard argument that sanctions against
South Africa would hurt blacks is the further refinement by the prime
minister that sanctions would take their toll in increasing numbers of
black children who would die as a consequence of them. This thesis is
frequently joined together with the statement that sanctions "won't work."

04/16/86 WED Texas professors say attack was ill-advised 1 19 13 NANCY
STANCILL Middle East experts at four Texas universities took a dim view of
President Reagan's decision to bomb Libyan targets, saying it increases the
danger to Americans without solving the problem of terrorism. "The
president's actions were very ill-advised and I think the American people
should speak out against it," Dr. Donald Quataert, a Middle East history
professor at University of Houston-University Park, said Tuesday. "The
bombing creates - at a higher level than ever before - a violent discourse
between the United States and Libya with consequences that simply can't be
foreseen," said Quataert.

04/16/86 WED OPEC oil embargo against U.S. called unlikely BUSINESS 1 14
JUDITH CROWN An OPEC oil embargo against the United States isn't likely and
would be a minor disruption even if the cartel's Arab members agreed to
Libya's request for economic sanctions, energy industry specialists say.
Libyan Oil Minister Fawzi Shakshuki said in Geneva, Switzerland, Tuesday
that his nation had asked other OPEC members to join in an embargo
following the U.S. raid on Libya. However, OPEC President Arturo Hernandez
Grisanti said the ministers "didn't consider an embargo" as they resumed
the summit that broke down March 24.

innocent Americans. "The administration's position is that they are out
there to make sure that international waters are used in connection with
international law," said Razi, an Iranian. "We go there again and again and
