LOCAL AGGLOMERATION AND EMPLOYMENT SUBCENTERS: THE HOUSTON EXPERIENCE

by Steven G. Craig* and Janet E. Kohlhase*

ABSTRACT

This paper explores the spatial landscape of a multi-centric city using data from the Houston metropolitan area. The paper examines the characteristics of employment subcenters, both in geographic terms and in economic terms. First, employment density functions are estimated where the geography of the subcenters is allowed to vary from points to lines to circles. Using statistical tests, the best spatial description is determined. Secondly, the agglomerative economic linkages within and between the subcenters are explored by examining the industrial and labor force composition of each subcenter. The results will contribute toward understanding the factors that lead to the growth of employment subcenters in major metropolitan areas.
