If you are injured and a medical doctor will certify in writing (get a form from me), then someone must notify me the day of the exam of this situation, so that I can make arrangement for another exam time. In no other case is missing an exam excusable.

Yes, but with conditions. You must visit me during office hours during the regular semester. Bring writing materials if you wish to make notes. Printing/copying is not allowed.

Historically, certain campus organizations have accumulated test questions and answers for regular classes. This tactic presents an unfair advantage to those organizations.

What if I miss a class lecture?

See/hide the answer to this question »

No class I teach has a portion of the grade directly attributable to attendance. However, the are several important reasons why you should attend class:

  • Critical information about the subject matter and its interpretation by other students and myself.
  • Administrative information about assignments, tests, and other grade-related issues.
  • Hints on exam material, answers, and helpful techniques to answers, especially if you read the chapter material before class and bring attempts at homework and quiz problems before they are due.
  • Students who miss many class sessions are subject to administrative withdrawal from the course. It is the professor's decision as to what constitutes "many".

Assignments

What if I miss an assignment?

See/hide the answer to this question »

Almost all assignments are taken online, where deadlines are specified well in advance. As a result, no makeups are allowed for assignments. It is your responsibility to keep a calendar of assignment deadlines and meet those deadlines. It is your responsibility to have access to a usable computer in order to complete the assignment. Typical pleas of "I forgot.", "My computer had a problem.", "I had to work.", "I had to go out of town.", and other excuses given after the deadline are worthless and a waste of both of our time.

Communication

How do I communicate with the instructor?

See/hide the answer to this question »

At UH, email is considered the official method of communication between teacher and student. Therefore, an up to date email address is absolutely essential to communication outside of the classroom. However, making an appointment or attending office hours to see a teacher in person are more effective and time-saving methods of communication if individual instruction or a more personal interaction is required. You should also put your class name and meeting time in all emails.
