UH Student to Present Research on Capitol Hill

Derek Goodwin research has shed new light on Talbert's role in building the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in Texas. Soon, the junior history major will take his findings to Washington D.C., as a presenter at "Posters on the Hill" on May 5. The annual event is sponsored by the Council of Undergraduate Research (CUR) to showcase students' research efforts to members of congress and representatives of higher education funding agencies. Goodwin's participation in "Posters on the Hill" is aided through the support of UH's Office of Undergraduate Discovery Programs. The office oversees the university's Learning through Discovery Initiative, which is aimed at bolstering undergraduate students' research abilities, providing research resources and partnering them with mentors.[UH Today 03.10.09]

QEP Grants Awarded to Support Integration of Research into Spring/Fall '09 Courses

The first round of QEP Curriculum Development Grants was awarded to a host of project aimed at enhancing undergraduate research. Approximately $260,000 in grants was distributed to 23 projects to support existing coursework or help develop new classes aimed at enhancing undergraduate research. As part of the comprehensive Learning through Discovery Initiative, the grants were made possible by the Office of Undergraduate Discovery Programs and supplemented by the Office of Educational Technology and Outreach. UH Reaffirmation of Accreditation Complete

Two years ago, the University of Houston embarked on a mission to secure its reaffirmation of accreditation by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The university received news of its successful reaffirmation of accreditation during the December 2009 SACS-COC Annual Business Meeting in San Antonio, TX. “We are pleased with the outcome of this evaluation and are especially optimistic about the QEP that was developed during this process and launched this fall.” said Jerry Strickland, interim vice president for academic affairs and provost. Grant to support faculty research

New QEP-driven funding program may benefit students, professors as early as 2009 academic year. Faculty members can now apply for a grant to help create more research-based undergraduate courses. University of Houston faculty members are getting a boost in their efforts to groom the next generation of leading researchers and professionals. Fall Workshop Series Focuses on Enhancing Students' Research Skills

The University of Houston already is home to a host of groundbreaking investigations, but it’s also the site of several programs aimed at developing the next generation of researchers. Among those is the Fall 2008 Discovery Workshop Series, offering workshops and panels focused on a range of topics relevant to research in any academic discipline. Quality Enhancement Plan Set to Launch in Fall 2008

To enhance students’ research abilities, UH will implement its Learning through Discovery Initiative this fall. This comprehensive plan is focused on enriching the learning experience of UH undergraduates by providing research-related skills training, engaging students in hands-on research opportunities and connecting them to mentors and resources on campus and in the community. QEP Presented at the February 2008 Board of Regents Meeting

Provost Donald J. Foss presented the UH Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) to the UHS Board of Regents on February 21, 2008. Twelve students and two recent graduates participated in the Student Research Showcase following the presentation.

Student Forum to Enhance Programs

Sixteen student forums across all colleges were conducted in Fall 2007. Students brainstormed ideas on how to incorporate active learning into courses, resources needed for effective research, and programs to excite students about research. Quality Enhancement Plan Focused on Undergrad Research

After considering feedback from the campus community, the focus of the QEP was approved by the UH SACS Leadership Team. The UH QEP will focus on undergraduate research with elements of mentoring and writing.
