   I.   Course Description

         A quantitative introduction to thermodynamics, electricity, magnetism, electromagnetic

         waves and optics.

 

   II.  Prerequisites:

        PHYS 1321, credit for or concurrent enrollment in MATH 2433.

 

   III.  Course Objectives

         Upon completion of this course, students should be able to 1) understand the  basic

         ideas of the topics listed above and to 2) solve quantitative problems of those topics.

 

   IV. Textbook

       "Fundamentals of Physics", by Haliday, Resnick and Walker, 8th Edition

 

   V. Course Content

        Chapters 18-37.

 

   VI.  Course Structure

        Lectures plus questions and answers with discussions of homework problems.

   VII: Course Requirements

        Work on the assigned homework problems, hand them in on time. Take advantage of the

        physics learning center located in S&R1 room 416. Solutions will be posted.

        There are three written exams, midterm I and II and final. The final is comprehensive.

 

   VIII: Evaluation and Grading

        Homework(10%), Midterms(20% each), Final(45%), others(5%).

        Typical grade boundaries: D to A

        Policy on grades of I(Incomplete): A grade of I(incomplete) is only awarded under

        extraordinary circumstances such as personal illness or a death in the immediate

        family. Documentation of either situation must be provided.
