Improving Programs for Residents

As a student at University of Houston, I began organizing social and educational events on campus. I successfully promoted events city-wide, and attracted audiences from Dallas and Austin. I considered the events an important means to promoting the university. I set goals for the events on a professional level to archive credibility and meet high expectations. By promoting the events to the media, I received prominent print coverage and was interviewed on radio. I received two "Program of the Year" awards for an innovative event I created, the annual Spring Arts and Music Festival, which promoted the university's arts programs. I organized a successful fundraiser to send a university wheelchair athlete to the Paralympic Games in Seoul, Korea. Additional events I hosted included a lecture by Russian Cosmonaut Valentin Lebedev and an informative debate with leaders of the UT-16, an activist group arrested and banned at the University of Texas.

Developing Effective Student Programs

When I was hired to advise student groups planning activities for residents, I recognized the need to improve and update the programs. I convinced the student committees to re-evaluate the expectations of the residents based on the intersts the residents pursued off campus. We were able to bring the quality of the outside programs into the residence halls making the activities we offered more appealing to residents. One solution was to create a more high tech multimedia atmosphere at the events to impress residents. This was accomplished even with our limited budget and new standards were set for general campus programming by other organizations.

Advising University Residents

As a Resident Advisor in the university dormitory, I dealt with crisis situations and planned effective programs to help residents avoid potentially harmful situations. In the case of a required program residents largely avoided, I promoted a crime prevention seminar on my floor and recorded perfect attendance from my residents, and even attracted residents from other floors. I correctly handled all emergency situations I faced. In the most difficult situation I faced, I proved a trustworthy counselor for a potentially suicidal student.
