Project II - Earthquakes

Earthquake Damage

The goal of Project II is for you to understand how and where earthquakes form. This exercise will take about 7 weeks and will due on May 6, 2000.

You may submit material via e-mail or by leaving it with me after class. When you hand in material make sure that the names of all of the group members are included. Everyone in the group will receive the same grade for the check points and the final report for Project I.

I suggest that you read through the project description so that you can see where this is heading. Feel free to work ahead.

The project consists of several exercises. Pay attention to the due date (check point) on the reading list. Work through the exercises in the order that they are described.

The setting of the project is as follows. You are the Director of the Convention Bureau in San Diego, California. The mayor has asked you to prepare a statement to be sent to prospective clients who are wondering if they should plan a major event. The statement should be approximately 1000 words and include the following:

  1. A brief statement on the geolgoic setting of this coastal city;

  2. A summary of past, present and predicted level of earthquake activity in southern California;

  3. A rational analysis of the probability of a magnitude 4.5 earthquake in the vicinity of San Diego;

  4. Preparations that the city has undertaken to minimize risk;

  5. Include 2 Figures from your work to illustrate the publication

    1. Part 1 : Manipulating Numerical Information

    2. Part 2 : Interpreting Earth History

    3. Part 3 : Earthquakes - An Introduction

    4. Part 4 : Plate Tectonics - The Cause of Earthquakes

      Hand in parts 1, 2, 3 and 4 on or before April 22, 2000

    5. Part 5 : Virtual Earthquake

    6. Part 6 : Plate Tectonics - Projecting Into The Future
