Review Materials

There are a number of good www sources for Mineralogy. I suggest that you spend sometime during the next two weeks checking these out. In particular I recommend that you start with:

Silicate Structures at the Amythest Minereal Gallery.

Read the sections on the major silicate classifications and read about the common, rock-forming silicates. In particular, pay attention to any information about solid solution and polymorphism in the following silicate mineral groups:

If you are interested in mineral specimens you should check out the collection at the Smithsonian

You will be expected to be familiar with the properties of the major chemical elements that make up the Earth's crust so a handy reference will be a copy of the Periodic Table

Other topics which were covered in one of the prerequisite courses are given below and you are encouraged to review these materials during the first few weeks of the course.
