Welcome to the Introduction to Petrography [GEOL 3235] Home Page

.

A description of the course and my expectations are given here.

Some of you will be "old hands" with respect to the Internet whereas others will feel the need for some sort of Introduction. Click on the highlighted text that follows to begin working through a a self guided tour. Remember to use the left arrow to return to this page.

In the following reading list are links to supplementary material that has been prepared for students enrolled in Physical Geology. These are considered to contain fundamental background material which I will assume that you have mastered. I encourage you to follow the links in each of these references although there may be a small amount of overlap.

A good geologic glossary is present on WWW : Glossary. Try this when you are not sure of the meaning of a term.

Images are an integral part of any geology course. Try the following searching algorithm to locate images of particular features.

The following reading list should be followed throughout the semester. Unfortunately, there is not a single text which is satisfactory for this course. Rather than have you buy two or three texts and assign well less than 33% of the material, I am going to try an experiment. I will have copies of older texts in the lecture room. I will indicate where good background material is located. In addition, I have developed some material for you which is on WWW and I strongly encourage you to plan to spend at least two hours per week at a computer reviewing the notes, taking electronic field trips, participating in "resource hunts", etc.
