Various sources have been studied for information about John Paxton as it is not certain as to his relationship with James Paxton of Ireland. Consensus suggests that he was either the son of James Paxton or the son of Hugh Paxton of Maryland and that Hugh and James may have been brothers.

John Paxton, son (or nephew) of James Paxton, was born around 1700 in Ireland. His wife was Grazell or Grace. Tradition claims that John, his wife and four year old son came from Ireland in 1740 to Bart Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The Paxton Family History published the will of John Paxton, which follows:

Will of John Paxton

In the name of God, I, John Paxton of the County of Lancaster and the Township of Bart, being weak of body but sound of mind and memory, blessed be to God, do this 23rd day of September, 1768, publish this my last will and testament in the manner following, that is to say:

  1. I give and bequeath to Grazell, my beloved wide, a full and sufficient maintenance off my estate, during her lifetime; and either to live as formerly, with my son, John Paxton, or otherwise, as she shall choose, together with eight pounds to be paid her yearly, of my estate, if she requires it; and at her decease, what she has not expended, to my son John Paxton, and his heirs, together with all her clothes and one bed and bed clothes.

  2. I give and bequeath to my dearly beloved son, John Paxton, all of the rest and residue of my goods, chattels and personal estate whatsoever, together will all an singular, my lands, messuages and tenements, fully to be possessed and enjoyed by him, his heirs and assigns forever. And further, I will allow my said son, John Paxton, full power to sell and convey, after my decease, or to hold it in possession, which he pleases. And further, I make and constitute and order my dearly beloved son, John Paxton, and Joseph Miller, to be my executors of this my last will and testament.
