Exercise 1 -- Internet

Exercise 1 -- A Tour of the Internet

Exercise 1 is designed to introduce you to several facets of the Internet:

  1. The Internet

  2. Newsgroups

  3. File Transfer Protocol

  4. Gopher

  5. The World Wide Web

  6. Internet Resources in the Geosciences

This is a rather long exercise that you may wish to work on in segments. You should do as much as you feel you need to in order to get comfortable using the Internet. Specific questions are listed below.

You will use Netscape 3.0 as your browser. Prior to about a year ago you would have had to use a different application for each of these components of the Internet. This is a good opportunity to become familiar with Netscape. Please DO NOT change the addresses of the mail box or the news groups. However, you should change e-mail address. This can be accomplished from the Options bar at the top of Netscape.

You should plan to spend about 2 to 3 hours going through the assignments. The assignment consists of serveral parts. Finish all parts and then e-mail me your answers.

Exercise 1

  1. Read some of the entries in the sci.geo.geology news group -- or one of the others listed. Think of a reasonable question or request for information (related to a project you are involved in) and post it. Send me the question and the responses.

  2. Perform the search for BLUESKIES and briefly tell me what the application does.

  3. Try the Veronica search to find the answer to one of the questions given in the gopher section.

  4. Take the Scavenger Hunt outlined in the WWW segment.

Remember ... send your answers to jbutler@uh.edu
