Egyptian Satellites

On May 31, 1995, President Hosni Mubarak signed
a historic document for launching the Egyptian satellite,
Nilesat. It transmits the various information programs in Arabic to the entire
world as well as the isolated areas of Egypt. Approximately 5 months later, on
October 15th, the agreement for the manufacture and launching of this satellite
was signed between the Radio and Television Union of the Arab Republic of Egypt,
and the French Matra Marconi. The project's aims are as follows:
- To support the state all out development
plan, in the field of education by
transmitting educational programs for all stages.
- To provide the necessary space
channels for the completion of the information plan, and the other government
sectors so that transmission would cover all Egypt
and abroad, to serve the needs of Egyptians and Arabs, in the sphere of education,
information and culture.
- To transfer knowledge about the construction
and operation of satellite networks,
and the manufacture of some of their components; thus, providing more work opportunities.
- To add at least 6 more TV channels
to transmit to new
communities in the coming period.
