How to Do Well In this Course

What the Course is Like:

___  Logic I satisfies a math requirement.

___  You should expect this course to seriously test your mathematical abilities.

___  Your performance on quizzes is a very strong predictor of your final grade.  FAILURE ON ANY QUIZ MEANS YOU ARE VERY LIKELY TO FAIL THE COURSE UNLESS YOU GET HELP.

How the Course is Organized:

___  There 7 SECTIONS  in this course, each one followed by a quiz.

___  In Distance Education classes, there are tutorials held prior to each quiz.  You are REQUIRED to have completed all assigned work by the time of the tutorial.

What is Expected of You:

FOR EACH SECTION you are expected to do the following (preferably in this order)

1.  Do the reading assigned on the syllabus.

2.  View or attend all Lectures in the section.

3.  Take all on line Self Tests to check your understanding.  Keep working on these until you perform at the 95% level, i.e. virtually no errors.

4.  Complete all assigned exercises by their due date, and check them for accuracy using the Course Notes and/or the PropLogic software that comes with your book.

5.  Redo 1-4 to prepare for the quiz, using the on line Study Guide.

How to Do Well:

___  Spend at least 10 hours a week on this course.  If your mathematics abilities are weak, you will need to spend more time than this, perhaps twice as much time.

___  This course demands regular practice.  Work on this course every day.  It is very difficult to master this kind of material at the last minute.

___  Seek help from your study group, the TA, or from me AS SOON AS you are aware that you do not understand something. (Contact information is on the syllabus.) This course is highly cumulative.  If you miss something, that may block your ability to learn subsequent material.

Materials for this Course

___  The Books:  Pospesel's Propositional Logic (all) and Predicate Logic (Ch. 2-4). Copies of the books are on reserve in the library.

___  PropLogic CD:  This software is essential for doing and checking your homework.  It is included  in Pospesel's Propositional Logic.  MAKE SURE YOU OBTAIN THIS SOFTWARE.  If you get a used copy of the book, make sure it includes the CD!  You are expected to check most of your exercises with this software.
