10/26 SWIFA 2 will be held at UNT on November 12.
8/31 The practice times for the Fall 2005 semester have been posted below.
Practices - Currently we hold two kinds of practices per week.
Beginner's Practice - Mondays and Wednesday 7pm - 8pm and 8pm - 9pm. Located in the Recreation and Wellness Center Multi Purpose room1 & 2.
This first practice is an instructive, semester-long beginner's practice that is held for people without prior experience in fencing.
Practice for beginners is an hour long, so attendance to only a single one of the hour sessions is necessary.
At present, about the first three to five weeks of beginner's practice are dedicated to footwork orientation. That is, getting used to standing on guard and moving properly. After that, the basics of weapon use are taught. Of the three weapons, Foil is the weapon that we use in order to orient a beginner to fencing. It is highly encouraged that Foil be used for at least a year before a switch to another weapon is considered.
At the end of the semester there will be a beginner's tournament open to everyone that attended the beginner's practice. The winner of that tournament will receive a standard set of practice equipment, including a jacket, glove, and mask.

Team Practice Tuesdays and Thursdays 7 pm - 9:30 pm. Located in the Recreation and Wellness Center Multi Purpose room1 & 2.
This is held for members that have completed a semester of beginner's practice or have prior fencing experience. Team practices will begin at the Multi-Purpose Room 1 in the Wellness Center. Team practice focuses on building endurance and working on speed and bladework. The first portion of practice is spent working on footwork and reaction drills, after which the team is divided into weapon squads.
Team members also participate in at least four tournaments a year, held by SWIFA(South West Intercollegiate Fencing Association). Some of the colleges that comprise SWIFA include UT Austin, Baylor, A&M, UNT, and SWTSU.
