"Blowing Sand May Exist"
(A highway sign near Clovis, New Mexico)

My husband who was driving thought it had
been written by a frustrated philosopher.
He came straight home and wrote an essay--
forty pages--on all its possible meanings. . . .

I had been meditating as we whizzed by.
I didn't even see it. "If it may
exist," he reasoned, "it also may not."
All I knew was that grit got in my eye.

We were out on the desert, like life.
We were out where you need reminders
and signs. And after reading them you think
of heeding. . . . Warned, you wait for the wind.
