Acct 5350/ Acct 7397 - CPA Review

This course is designed to help prepare students for the CPA exam. It does not count towards the 30 hours of core accounting classes CPA requirement but it does count towards the 150 hours of college hours CPA requirement.  The course will cover all four parts of the CPA exam. Some of the material should have been covered in your other courses, some of the material you will be seeing for the first time. We will be using the CPA Excel software for all four parts and my lectures for the FARS (financial accounting and reporting) and Regulation (income tax parts) portions of the CPA exam.  Grading is based upon completion of required modules (48% of the grade), attendance (12% of the grade), and performance on practice CPA exams (40% of the grade).  The more modules you complete and the more time you spend taking practice exams the better you should do on the CPA exam.  I will also substitute a score of 100 for each part of the CPA exam that you pass during the course.

I would suggest that you buy the CPA Excel software as soon as possible so you can get a head start on the course. It would be great if you could complete the auditing module before our class starts and take that part of the CPA exam at the beginning of the semester. That would allow you to have more time to prepare for the other parts of the CPA exam. If you can not start early then I would suggest you take the CPA exam as we finish the related part. For example, the auditing part will be covered via CPA Excel starting at the beginning of the semester and lasts for one month. You could then take the audit part of the CPA exam shortly after completing the auditing module. Be aware that there are no CPA exams given in the last month of each calendar quarter (i.e. March, June, September, and December). Since I will be lecturing on the FARS part of the CPA exam for the entire semester, I would wait to take that part of the exam until we finish my lectures as there are some topics that I will be covering that are important and that were not covered in your other courses.

I have negotiated a price with the CPA Excel people of $499 for UH students in this class. This includes the guided software package and simulations. The guided software with simulations normally sells for $1250. Alternatively you can buy the video guided seminar edition for $699 instead, which adds over 60 hours of video lectures covering all four parts of the CPA exam to the guided software package and simulations.  A demo CD of the video lectures will be given to you on the first day of class. Both packages include unlimited retakes until you pass the exam and also include mentoring which means that there are online instructors available to answer any questions. It also means you can sign up early (they take credit cards) and use the software part of the course now. Here is a link that talks a little more about the CPA Excel part of the course and information about signing up for this part of the course: http://uh.cpaexcel.com/

One textbook will be used in our class. It is the Gleim's 2009 CPA Review -Financial. We have a discount program with Gleim Publications so I would suggest you order directly from them. The total cost is $30 plus $6 shipping. If you would like to place your order over the phone, call (800) 874-5346 and dial 'zero' to speak with an Accounting Training Consultant. Mention your student status at the University of Houston and provide your student email for verification.  They have promised to send the book out the same day if you order before noon. It is also possible to buy this in the bookstores but it will be $44.95 plus tax from the bookstores.
