January 16, 2012, UofH goes to Rome!
Thinking about joining us in Rome this summer? The full itinerary and details are in a tri-fold, double-sided flyer, here.
There will be the ILAS 4350 course, and a course on Roman Civilization taught by Dr. Sarah Costello. We also anticipate being able to offer an INTB course on Globalization, and an Intro to Italian course. But those last two offerings will depend on the number of students we have on the program.
The application is on UH Study Abroad website, and be sure to put Rome and Prof. Thomas Behr in the section for which program you are applying to: http://www.uh.edu/studyabroad/FacultyChecklist.pdf (the application is the first item on this checklist, and is hyperlinked there).
The program cost includes our dorms, classrooms, computer lab, library, group welcome and farewell meals, several guided visits and tickets for museums, local transportation passes for the whole five weeks, and several excursions outside of Rome. Two major all-day excursions, one to Pompeii and Naples, and another to Assisi. Note the price listed on the flyer is expected to go down a lot, based on the Euro-Dollar exchange rate now and especially on the size of our group (more students, lower per student cost). Your flight, food and tuition are extra. There is a UH Study Abroad scholarship that everyone who applies gets, usually around $500. There is a $250 fee credit per course for Study Abroad. For Pell Grant recipients there is another scholarship possible also, the Gilman Scholarship through UH Study Abroad.
Requirements vary depending on the courses you choose, but mainly at least sophomore status and good academic standing. Check out our UH in Rome Facebook page for keeping up on developments!

May 10 thru July 2, 2010 - Research internship with Greenpeace Solutions
I was tasked with developing an economic model to evaluate different policy interventions aimed at incentivizing the deployment of climate-friendly technologies in developing countries. This is a particularly relevant issue because technology development and transfer is universally recognized as a key aspect of climate mitigation and adaptation.

October 13, 2009 - Co-Recipient of the Graduate Student Teaching Excellence Award
"The department has decided that graduate students doing an exceptional job teaching should be acknowledged. [...]. The department will aim for recognizing two students each year with a preference for choosing a 4th and a 5th year student."
"This year's exceptional teachers are Amelie Carlton and Elisabetta Gentile. They both received very high teaching evaluations and flattering comments from the students such as: 'She makes an ordinarily difficult/dull class easy to listen to and understand' (Elisabetta) and 'Induct her into the economics teachers hall of fame' (Amelie). We hereby follow the advice of the latter anonymous undergrad."
