This course will cover chapters 1 through 17 in Fundamentals of Physics (Edition 8E, Binder Ready) by Halliday, Resnick, and Walker, Wiley publishers with a WileyPlus access code for online homework. The Physics Department recommends that you purchase the looseleaf package, ISBN 9780470176252, from the UH bookstore or the Rothers’ bookstore. Hardback copies of the text sold at these bookstores may not come with the Wiley Plus access code. You will have to purchase it separately from the Wiley Publishers online, at a significant additional cost.

We will cover on average more than one chapter per week. Scheduled hour exams will be given on Fridays, 5:30 to 7:00 pm in a room TBA. There will be scheduled three hour exams: one at the end of chapter 03 on Sep. 18, one at the end of chapter 09 on Oct. 30, and one at the end of the course on Dec. 04. There will be additional unannounced tests. The final will be comprehensive. It will be held Wednesday, Dec. 16, 11-2. Each exam will focus on testing your problem solving skills.

Required homework will be assigned daily. An average of eight problems per week will be handed in on paper and graded on a scale of 0 to 10. The other 24 will be submitted on WileyPlus and count 1 pt per problem. Solutions will be posted on the Vnet course home page. Attendance at the discussion section will count 10 homework points. Presenting a problem on the blackboard during the discussion will be worth an additional 10 pts. A 5 point penalty will be assessed for hardcopy homework turned in late. WileyPlus work may be attempted up to 5 tries per problem, and must be completed on time (no online late homeworks are permitted). Late paper homework must be turned in directly to me, not buried in a subsequent submission stack. Under normal circumstances, students will be limited to no more than 6 late paper homeworks. Late paper homework will not be accepted after the solutions are posted, usually after the following class. The homeworks that are due the week before each hour test will not be accepted late under any circumstances. The required homework assignments are listed below. The problems to be submitted on paper are given
in boldface print:

Provided that a grader is assigned, the formula used to compute your numeric grade is the following:

1321form.gif (1494 bytes)

Note that each quiz is equally weighted, that the quizzes constitute 45 percent of your final grade, that the final is 30 percent, and that you can gain 20 points by doing all of the homework correctly. That's usually more than the difference between a C and an A

There is a required diagnostic exam or pre-test for this course. It will be administered by CASA Testing Center from July 27th - August 3rd and August 26th - Sept. 3rd. If you score 50% or below on this exam, you must show proof of having completed the prerequisite for this course, credit for or concurrent enrollment in MATH 1432. If you have not completed the prerequisite, you will be dropped from the course and any labs associated with this course by me. If you score 50% or below and have completed the prerequisite, we recommend that you enroll in PHYS 1100. You can log onto the CASA website to make a reservation at http://casa.uh.edu/ or you may go to room 222 Garrison Gym. The diagnostic pretest will count 5% of your final grade.

Problem Solution Technique

This problem solution technique is a concise statement of the methodology that virtually all science teachers convey by one means or another. The author is a local high school teacher. It is so good as is, I have no need to write another version of my own just to exercise my typing skills.

Grading Policy

A copy of the instruction memo that I give to the grader is posted here.
